thanks! :D

This is a good dystopian piece but it doesn't capture the helplessness and overwhelming oppression from 1984.

It's too generic to accurately portray motifs and themes from Orwell's work. 1984 heavily emphasizes a totalitarian government that quickly and strongly pushes their agenda openly and is quick to silence anyone or anything even remotely against it. Perhaps a big but indistinct crowd (to keep with the psuedo minimalism) looking up (to portray they are the lower class) at Big Brother propaganda (they are in charge, what they want to see) with only one person looking away and to the viewer. In contrast, to the sides, heavy shadows with shadowy figures watching the crowd with no telling features of they're pro or anti establishment.

Obviously, it's my personal take, but I can see that you have a strong feel for dystopian and I feel there can be a lot more done with the single character that is the focal point of your work.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review! You're certainly on to something there - this piece would have benefitted from some more details, for sure! I played around with some different ideas, such as making Winston much smaller, the buildings taller, and even tried to add the iconic "Big Brother is watching you" poster. In the end, this minimalist version is what I went with. :) I'm glad this painting sparked some thoughts in you, thanks for coming by and interacting with it/me.

I'm really loving the hair, it's vibrant and lively giving the overall image a lot of energy especially paired with your background

lvlaxdeviant responds:

Thank you! First I wanted simple black and red, but ended up using different shades of them and added some lighting. I'm glad it payed off! (:

This is really great! If you don't mind answering, how did you achieve such strong, clean glowing effects?

SpencerXavier responds:

thanks I just love doing neon type stuff. I like using dark backgrounds and just putting over-emphasis and heavy saturation on objects on the backgrounds lol

This is amazing. I particularly love the flowing hair and lighting

Kaolinn responds:

Thank you so so much! Hair and light were 2 of the most fun parts to paint too :)
